Core Values Questions for Family Legacy Recording
Values are the invisible compass behind every major decision — who you married, how you raised your children, what you sacrificed, what you refused to sacrifice. These questions make that compass visible, creating a record of the principles that guided your life when no one was watching and when the cost of integrity was high.
Values questions begin at Level 7 because articulating values requires significant life experience and self-knowledge. The questions don't ask what you believe you SHOULD value — they explore what you actually prioritized when forced to choose. Actions reveal values more honestly than statements, and these questions dig into the actions that defined you at life's crossroads.
Early questions identify core values through specific choices: When did you choose integrity over advantage? When did loyalty conflict with honesty? What principle have you never compromised? Later questions examine evolution: Which values did your parents give you that you kept? Which did you consciously reject? How did becoming a parent change what you prioritize? What value did you once hold firmly that life taught you to release?
At the deepest levels, these questions probe the gaps between stated and lived values: Where have your actions contradicted your beliefs? What value do you most want to pass on, and what evidence do your children have that you lived it? What principle would you defend even if it cost you everything?
For legacy purposes, values recordings create the most directly actionable inheritance. Future generations facing difficult decisions can hear their ancestor say: "This is what mattered to me, and this is why." It's moral mentorship that transcends time — a compass passed hand to hand across generations, helping descendants navigate territory their ancestors couldn't have predicted but prepared them for through the simple act of naming what matters and living accordingly.
